Aluminum Wiring

Deteriorating aluminum wiring imposes a hidden danger. Aluminum corrosion increases resistance to electrical current, causing wire overheat at the connection points. Expanding aluminum causes fasteners to loosen. This can lead to even more overheating and arcing which may start a fire.

Our electricians have been servicing the Portland Metro and Vancouver WA areas for a number of years. We have encountered and fixed a great deal of aluminum wiring related problems like burned connections that have degraded over time in our customers’ houses.

There are more than 2 million homes in the U.S. that have unsafe aluminum wiring. Most of them were built between 1965 and 1972. Unsure if there is aluminum branch circuit wiring at your house? Call Mr. Electric of Portland and Vancouver today and we will inspect your wiring to make sure it’s safe.

We have access to COPALUM certified technicians.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends the COPALUM system for aluminum wiring repairs. COPALUM certified electricians, who are thoroughly trained by the manufacturer in the proper use of the special powered crimping tool attach a piece of copper wire to the existing aluminum wire with a specially designed metal sleeve, which is crimped to 10,000 PSI. The sleeve and tool are matched and are only available through COPALUM certified electricians. If aluminum wiring is repaired via the COPALUM method, there is no a need to inspect connections yearly to guarantee they are secure; unlike any other non-approved aluminum wiring repair solutions that require annual inspections.

There are few alternatives, but the best available solution is to replace the aluminum wiring with copper. Our expert local electricians can inspect your wire and take all the necessary measures to ensure your safety.

Aluminum wiring danger signals:

  1. Lights that flicker
  2. Sensitive electronic equipment failures
  3. Unusual static on radio and/or TV
  4. Switches or receptacles that arc or even spark
  5. Plates on switches are hot to the touch
  6. Dead or partially working circuits
  7. Continuously tripping circuit breakers or blowing fuses
  8. Arcing sounds within electrical panel
  9. Melted or deteriorated insulation
  10. Burning odors

Remember: not all failing aluminum wire provides obvious and easily detected warning signs. Wiring connections can fail without any indications or warning problems.

If you have noticed any of these trouble signs, have a qualified electrician inspect your wiring to determine whether the problem is caused by deteriorating aluminum connections.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Aluminum Wiring Repair Recommendations Report, homes wired with small gauge aluminum wire manufactured before 1972 are 55 times more likely to have wire connections that reach Fire Hazard Conditions than a home with copper wire.
